KDE4 Screenshots

Salta ai commenti

Finally, some mouthwatering eye candy of the much awaited KDE 4. The maintainer of the Planet Diaz web site has been collecting screenshots and mock-ups of the current development of KDE 4 and posting them in the site’s forums to give us an early idea about the major new update of the popular open source desktop. From what we can see here and here, KDE 4 is going to be a radically different beast, with many interesting ideas being implemented as we speak. Although no firm release date is given, KDE 4.0 is expected to be out before the end of 2006.

  • Plantdiaz has been shlashdotted ;-)

  • Hmmm, nothing ground breaking or in fact different to what we have now - what happened to a ‘completely new paradigm’ for user interaction?

  • KDE 5.0 can be previewed at http://www.apple.com/macosx/ ….

  • Ok it looks great but the problem as far as I can see is the terrible use of desktop estate. 3 menu buttons ? Are you people insane or just drunk? Even the single * start * button is getting to be really old and is probably not the best way to organize controls but 3 is just too much. Plus if you are copying the Gnome idea you should note that there you have 2 taskbars and KDE just doesn’t do things like that. So no-go for the design from me … sorry. The consistent icon size is a good idea though. Not sure how good it is copying MS’s design scheme for Windows is though. Yes explorer has a good design for the most parts but displaying information that the user never requested is bad IMO.
Also the “Edit Metadata” button is a great addition but it means absolutelly nothing to a nonprogrammer or a geek. But then again it’s just an idea preview so I’ll hold off my opinion until the final design is in.
It’s really nice to see inovation on the OSS desktop front though it might be too little too late.

  • Bloggo is latin for defecation. I thought you should know.

Nice screenshots! Eye candy is good, but brush regularly, else your soul will be filled with envy cavities.

  • Screenshot #1 looks AWESOME!
I hope they really come up with this particular wallpaper as default. Damn, this looks good!!!

  • For those who said that the site was slashdotted you are wrong. The site was down because the host suspended my account, even better….I left the host. Now I am in another hosting, so everything is back to normal. My site could handle digg bandwith, so it can handle easily any other website.

Have fun with the mockups, I am currently adding some new exciting mockups. They will be posted in a few hours.

Best Regards, MrDiaz (Planet Diaz administrator)
